Rancho del Zocalo rebuilds its menu around barbacoa

The Frontierland restaurant has swapped carne asada for shredded barbacoa in both its tacos and its burrito. Pozole, a chicken tostada salad and cauliflower tacos are new as well.

Barbacoa now anchors the menu at Rancho del Zocalo. The Duo of Barbacoa Tacos costs $16.49 and the Burrito Sonora with Barbacoa is the same price. Both come with rice, beans and a lime wedge.

Pozole is the other big arrival, at $13.49. It is a pork and hominy soup with cabbage, radish and lime, served with corn tortilla chips. A Chicken Tostada Salad joins the entrées at $15.49.

The plant-based slot has changed hands. The Hacienda Salad is gone and Duo of Cauliflower Tacos takes its place at $15.49, built on cauliflower al pastor.

Zocalo Fries, the Esquite Bowl, the kids' mac and cheese and the cucumber-lime agua fresca have all come off. Two slushies, jamaica and horchata, are new at $8.49.

If you're avoiding something

The cauliflower tacos. This is the plant-based plate now. It is cauliflower al pastor in corn tortillas, with rice and beans on the side.

The guacamole. A $2.99 side of avocado, cilantro and lime. It suits a low-carb or keto day. It is not a low-FODMAP choice, because a side portion of avocado is over the threshold.

The pinwheels. These are fried wheat pastry. Skip them if you avoid gluten or wheat.

The shrimp cocktail. It arrives with crackers, so there is wheat on the plate. The shrimp itself sits in a tomato and lime broth with red onion.

The tacos, burrito and enchiladas. All of these are corn tortillas rather than flour, apart from the Burrito Sonora, which is a flour tortilla. Rice and beans come with most of them.
